Archaic symbols and objects from cultures around the world that have retained their influence and fascination into the present day are an important part of Sonja Keppler’s artistic practice. She experiments with a wide range of materials, including electronic components, papier-mâché, bronze, ceramics, plastics, and fungal mycelium. She creates works that draw upon ancient cultures, honoring them while bringing their visual languages, forms, and traditions into the present. The sculptor’s works embody various entities, while also evolving into increasingly abstract forms, whose nature or meaning is never meant to become entirely clear.
Created intuitively, these objects come close to earlier, primordial forms of expression without imitating them. Instead, entirely new objects emerge. The inherent qualities of primordial materials enter into a symbiotic relationship with form. Surfaces emerge with a wide variety of textures, inviting a sense of closeness and touch.
